On January 4, 2018, the South Point joined a list of businesses that handed out bonuses after the passage of the Trump administration's tax reform bill. The new hotel wing was topped off on Matwo weeks ahead of schedule and opened on July 21, 2008, making it, at the time, the largest resort and casino to target mostly locals in the entire Las Vegas valley. Along with the expansion was an additional 10,000 square feet of convention space, three bars and two new restaurants. It was revealed that the new hotel tower was going to include 25 floors and would include 830 rooms. More details of the March 2006 expansion were unveiled. Along with selling came a new name for hotel, which was now 'South Point'. On October 24 of 2006, Boyd Gaming sold the South Coast to Michael Gaughan due to the company being unhappy with the resort's first year of operation.

However, some of the resort's interior were still in the works, and the other half of the hotel tower were still incomplete. On December 18, 2003, the County Commission gave zoning approval for a new 2,139-room Southern California-themed resort and casino named 'South Coast'.
